In this ongoing series, I highlight some of the lesser-known “sights” of Portsmouth, NH—the city where I live—many recognizable only to locals, or seen only in passing. In my travels around the city, I keep an eye out for elements that define its character: the quiet corners, little details, and fleeting glimpses that form a backdrop to everyday life. I’m especially sensitive to all that is changing, as development and climate change remake our world and familiar places subtly—or suddenly— become unrecognizable. Like the ocean tide, the world is perpetually in flux, and Portsmouth is no exception. Businesses open and close, buildings appear and vanish, landscapes shift. I feel a kind of desperation to record everything before it disappears forever, as a testament to the evolving identity of this city. Through these photographs, I encourage you to take time to see the beauty in the overlooked and underappreciated, and to consider what truly defines a place.
